Something I read

13.10.2008

These days I read some books and I found out some interesting things.

Max HP = reted Hp x 4

Max torque = torque at rated PRM x 9

Max Current = full load amperage x 5

These formulas concern the engine.

MAx HP = reted Hp x 4 – the maximum power of one electric engine is equal to its nominal power multiplied by 4.

In another book I read something interesting about the tires. The pattern of the tire has a great importance. For example of a suitable tire the book suggests GoodYear Invicta GL.

As you may notice, the tire has radial pattern and it has a very little space of contact. By choosing the right model of tires, you can increase incredibly the past distance with only one filling of the tank.

Tesla roadster

Tesla roadster – for me this is the EV that will make its way into history. It’s like Tesla shouted to the world: “Look! Open your eyes!”. The batteries and the engine of Tesla produce 250 h.p. and a torgue of 380 Hm, further more the maximum torgue is available since 0 RPM. With just one charge of the accumulators you can travel for 350 km. Tesla starts and accelerates extremely quietly. And so, unconsciously, it reaches 14 000 RPM. The acceleration of 100 h.p. takes 3.9 sec, and the time of acceleration continues until the maximum speed of more than 200 km/h is reached. The whole idea of this car is to show the many advantages of this technology in regard to the already old conception of vehicles with internal combustion engine. It’s fast, powerful, economic and ecological! It’s something that none of the manufacturers can assemble in just one ordinary automobile. Here you can see some tables:

The basis of the EV

08.10.2008

Today we’ll have a bit of theory:). What are the basic elements of an electric vehicle (EV)? They are:

· batteries

· controller

· electric engine

If I have to compare the different parts of an EV and a normal petrol car, then the batteries of the EV should be the tank in the normal car. The energy is stored in the batteries and later it will be transformed in some kind of mechanical movement. The controller serves to command the electric engine. It determines the velocity of rotation of the electric motor. It has the same aim as the carburettor. It measures the fuel depending on the velocity we’d like to reach. In our case, the given fuel is the voltage of the batteries. The controller can perform other tasks just like the other controllers in the modern automobiles. The electric motor itself is simple :) If I have to be more specific, the electric motor has a moving part – a rotor and an immobile part – a stator. Just one electric motor has much less moving parts than an internal combustion engine. It has a bigger efficacy, but I’ll write about this in a separate post.

Monbat

Like I said in the introduction of this blog, I’ll try to use only Bulgarian parts for this project. I decided to use the semi-traction batteries of Monbat. The advantages and disadvantages of the various types of batteries will be discussed in different section. Now I’d like to present you the model of Monbat that I chose – “Megalight Power”. These batteries are produced according to the AMG technology. They have a small cycle of charge of the discharge (300), but they are light and they have great current electricity, which is a big plus for every sport EV.

ELPROM-EMS

I made a small research of the Bulgarian marked of EV and then I chose the electric motors of ELPROM-EMS. The most simple to control and at good price are also the electric engines with permanent electricity.

The model I chose has the following features:

· Working voltage 144V

· Nominal power 22 kw

· Nominal revolutions 4000 prm

This model was successfully used in many other projects like this one. Some of these projects can be seen on this website: www.evalbum.com

Jetta mk2 coupe – the car donor

Ive chosen VW Jetta mk2 coupe to be donor for my project:

At the end the EV should look like this from the outside:

Why VW Jetta? It’s just that from many years one of my favourite sites is www.vwclub.bg/forum, so there’s no chance that I’ll be using any other car :) Yes… I also have VW Golf. Yes, it’s one of those old, square and beautiful cars :P
